Qdoba
Qdoba is an expanding chain of fast casual restaurants serving Mexican style cuisine.
The chain was founded as Zuma Fresh Mexican Grill in 1995 by Anthony Miller. The company hoped to expand through franchising. The trademark for Zuma Mexican Grill was challenged by "ZuZu's Mexican Grill" of Boston; So, the company changed its name to Z-Teca Mexican GrillM. This name was challenged by Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill; So, the company invented the name Qdoba in 1999.
Corporate History
- 1995: The company was founded in Denver as Zuma Fresh Mexican Grill.
- 1997: Company started offering franchises, but first changed its name to Z-Teca Mexican Grill as a company in Boston used the name Zuma.
- 1999: Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill sued Z-Teca. The company changed its name to Qdoba.
- 2003: Jack In the Box bought Qdoba from ACI Capital for $25 million, and then moved the headquarters to San Diego, Ca. Qdoba had 85 outlets at the time.
- 2018: Apollo Management acquired Qdoba which had 700 restaurants for $305 million.
