The Black-eyed Pea
The Black-eyed Pea is a Denver based chain of restaurants noted for its Southern style menu.
This company began as a franchise. The franchise company collapsed with the Colorado chain and one restaurant in Dallas surviving.
History of The Black Eyed Pea
The chain was established by Gene Street and Phil Cobb in 1975 with its first location on Cedar Springs Road in the Oak Lawn district of Dallas, Tx. The chain expanded to 130 restaurants.
The chain grew to 130 restaurants. It was purchased by the British conglomerate Unigate in 1986. Unigate sold the chain to DenAmerica in 1997. DenAmerica was the largest franchiser of Dennys's at the time.
DenAmerica claims that Unigate misrepresented sales.
DenAmerica changed its name to The Phoenix Group; However, the declining sales at its Dennys' restaurants coupled with disappointing sales from The Black-eyed Pea forced the company into Chapter 11.
The Colorado and Texas franchises were operating at a profit and kept the name of the failed franchise system. They are owned by the holding company RMR Colorado based in Greenwood Village, Co.
