The company was founded in 1973 by Dave and Gail Liniger. They had sold 100 franchises within the first two years. They began having annual conventions in 1976 and introduced the famous RE/MAX balloon during the 1978 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.
The company held its IPO in 2013. They trade on the NYSE with the symbol RMAX.
