National Renewable Energy Laboratory

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden is noted for its cutting edge research into alternative energy sources. This is where you will find advanced research into solar, wind, biomass, hydrogen, and geothermal energy sources.

The world's oil supplies are limited. Future generations need to avoid the mistake of overdependence on a single source of fuel. Each of the above technologies promises to address small segments of future energy problems. The real solution is in diversity.

Imagine for a moment the state of Wyoming covered from end to end with windmills. It's not a pretty sight. Likewise covering the West Slope with photo cells would be a waste of natural wonders.

Biodeisel is a technology that we have now and should put into full production. Biodeisel provides a ready market for farm and food industry waste. However, there will be a point at which biodeisel will move from reducing waste to environmental degradation. There is a temptation to put all fallow land into the production of biodeisel. However, that would lead to the degradation of farm lands.

Much of the puzzle of a sustainable future is learning to build energy efficient buildings, improving the efficiency of the electrical grid and investing both our time and mental efforts into learning fuel efficiencies.

The site has interesting essays on renewable energy, basic science and applying technologies.

The site invites you to visit the NREL facilities.
